About Us
First envisioned and formed by DJ Equalizer in 1986, Sounds Of Silence Productions were born. With the support of long-time mentor and fellow Baltimore music legend, the late, great Bernie Rabinowicz, owner of the legendary Music Liberated stores in Baltimore, Md., DJ Equalizer embarked on a task to turn the DJ business in Baltimore into a reality, and Started The First Known Underground Indie Music Record Pool in the U.S.
Although there were many record pools in the country, they were all controlled indirectly by the Major Record Labels. More precisely, the Pool Directors Kissed the Major Labels' Asses to get their commercial, Pop-Oriented Product for free. They then, in turn, only distributed said products to an elite few DeeJays whose clubs looked good on paper for the Label's Demographics. Music wise, this was very discriminatory to The Underground Dance Music Scene which had only word of mouth for promotion, but Thousands more Deejays working, and countless numbers of fans for the product.
His Record Pool/ Promotion Co. Exclusively distributed Underground Indie Label releases to hard working Club Jocks Throughout the Baltimore area and Europe, and turned many a U.S. Jock on to the U.K. Underground Imports.
He then opened Inner City Records. Another legendary chain of stores, whose main purpose was to cater to Dj's, and those who aspired to be, helping to Create a Club Culture in the City.
These stores literally took over as the place to be and be seen. Whether it was networking with other jocks from across the region, getting the latest Tracks, or picking up a mixer for a show, Inner City Records became the trendsetter of Baltimore's music scene.
He then began the groundbreaking and legendary record label Inner City Recods Co., creating a different style of house music that would be labeled Baltimore Club Music. To him, it was just a kind of house, a form of BreakBeat music which he used to perform live. He was one of the First Known U.S. Breakbeat DeeJays, and as a Recording Artists, one of the very first U.S. Artists to land spots on the U.K. BreakBeat Charts.
Starting the First, Full-Time Real Baltimore Based Record Company, it's no wonder Inner City Records Co. set the standards in Baltimore, and to this day is still the musical model and inspiration for all who have followed.
While the Major Labels were concentrating on the digital realm, Systematically Killing the Single in All formats to force full-Length CD sales, Inner City Records Co. was concerened only for DeeJays. All releases were on vinyl only.
